What Is Osmotic Blistering in Fiberglass Pools — and How Do You Prevent It?

Most fiberglass pools can blister over time. Ours can't — because of how Imagine Pools builds every layer of the shell. Here's the difference, and the warranty that backs it.

If you've researched fiberglass pools, you've probably run across the term osmotic blistering — small bubbles or blisters that form on a fiberglass shell when water slowly works its way into the laminate. It's one of the few things that can genuinely go wrong with a fiberglass pool. Here's the good news: the fiberglass pools we build won't blister — and there's a specific engineering reason why.

What Causes Osmotic Blistering?

A fiberglass shell is built up in layers — a smooth gel-coat surface over structural layers of fiberglass and resin. Osmosis happens when water molecules push through the outer coat and reach a layer that isn't fully sealed. Water collects, pressure builds, and the surface lifts into a blister.

The root cause is almost always the resin used to saturate those layers — and this is where most of the industry quietly cuts corners.

Why Most Fiberglass Pools Are at Risk

Resin is what locks water out of a fiberglass shell. There are two common types: cheap polyester resin, and premium vinyl ester resin, which is far more water-resistant because its molecular structure leaves fewer open sites for water to penetrate.

Here's the catch: most manufacturers use vinyl ester resin only in the very top layer — a thin barrier coat — then switch to cheaper polyester resin for every structural layer underneath. That single thin coat is all that stands between your pool water and a laminate that will absorb water the moment the barrier is compromised. It's a cost-saving shortcut, and it's exactly why blistering shows up on so many fiberglass pools over the years.

Why Our Fiberglass Pools Won't Blister

We install Imagine Pools, and Imagine builds their shells differently. Every alternating layer of fiberglass is fully saturated in their Vipoxy™ vinyl ester resin — not just the surface coat, but every single layer of the pool. There is no cheaper polyester layer hiding underneath waiting to absorb water. The entire shell is engineered to act as one impermeable, water-tight membrane, so there is simply nowhere for osmotic blisters to form.

That's the difference between a pool designed to resist blistering and a pool built so it can't blister in the first place.

Backed by a Lifetime Blistering Warranty

Imagine is so confident in full vinyl-ester construction that every one of their pools carries a Lifetime Structural Osmosis Warranty — coverage aimed specifically at blistering and osmosis — alongside a lifetime structural warranty. Very few fiberglass manufacturers will put their name behind a blistering guarantee like that, because very few build their shells to earn it.

When you buy a fiberglass pool from Fireside, that warranty comes with it. You're not just hoping your pool won't blister — you're covered for the life of the pool if it ever did.

The Bottom Line

Osmotic blistering is a resin problem, and it's the reason we install Imagine Pools and nothing less. If you're comparing fiberglass quotes around Greenville or Easley, ask every builder one simple question: "Is the vinyl ester resin in every layer, or just the top coat?" With our pools, the answer is every layer — and it's in writing.
